What do you do every day? I “herd” technical IT teams across the globe, to ensure we deliver value and quality IT solutions for global partners.

How did you get into the tech space? I received a bursary from a big mining company to study IT and work for them in that space when I graduated, the rest is history…..

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? It’s a question but guides my thinking in a lot of difficult situations…. “do you want to be successful or significant?”.

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? It’s exciting and dynamic, but it’s complex and it isn’t a 9-5 job, and you work with highly intelligent, often crazy people. The frameworks are always changing. Be prepared to try things and be prepared for change.

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? I never quite know what the day will bring, so it’s a new challenge everyday!

Who do you want to be when you grow up? An executive coach.

What do you do every day? Like everyone else, I save the world 🙂 … no seriously, the best part of my day is spent on software architecture and development, the challenging part goes to scaling and optimising existing code, the interesting part is spent analysing data, and – luckily – the smallest part on client support. I also happen to lead a small team of engineers.

How did you get into the tech space? In 1993 after finishing a BA Psychology and a Higher Diploma in Personnel Management, I approached a bank for a position in their HR department. They took a look at my CV, saw my maths marks and suggested I take an aptitude test for programming. I had the afternoon free, so I agreed to this. Before I knew it, there I was on a 3-month COBOL course – one girl and nine guys! For the first time in my life I discovered something that just felt right, and 20 years later it still feels right.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? When it comes to coding keep the final decision to the last responsible moment. This was a ‘eureka!’ moment for me that came while doing a course with Heinz Kabutz – definitely a strategy that I apply to my life as well as my work.

What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the tech sector? Accept that you will be a student for life, and learn, learn, learn. Which, if you think about it, could also translate to play, play, play!

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? Being able to design and build software that enables people to do their work more efficiently, being able to add structure and insight to data enables decision makers – and that’s a big thing.

Every day, I get to be creative, and I get to discover new ideas, processes and technologies. It feels like art to me.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A geek.
