Leigh-Ann Fowle, Girl Geek Dinners & The Written Word

Name: Leigh-Ann Fowle

Designation: Copywriter, Content Creator

Company: Girl Geek Dinners and The Written Word

What do you do every day? My day job is as a copywriter. Basically, I create content for clients, the majority of which is for digital channels. My passion project is Girl Geek Dinners, which I run together with my partner Kirsty Sharman. Girl Geeks is a networking event for women in tech.

How did you get into the tech space? When I started freelancing, I was looking for networking opportunities for women in tech and I just couldn’t find any! I found out about Girl Geeks and I started the JHB branch in 2011. Girl Geeks is a worldwide phenomenon, with chapters in 99 cities.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? That you can do whatever you put your mind to doing, provided that you are willing to work hard. Some of the most talented people I know didn’t start off in the career that they ended up in.

What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the tech sector? Go for it! It is an exciting industry with great growth potential and new things happening every single day. And build up your network – it’s important.

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? Knowing that I get to create content for some inspiring brands and the opportunity to learn on a daily basis.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? A superhero, one that has it all!

Mich Atagana

Mich AtaganaName: Mich Atagana

Designation: Managing Editor

Company: Memeburn/Burn Media

What do you do every day?  I run a tech news publisher. I manage the core Burn Media team as well as our contributors. I am tasked with driving editorial strategy, promoting the brand as well as the production of content around tech issues and Africa’s tech ecosystem.

How did you get into the tech space? I am not sure if there was a defining moment, I have always been interested in tech and it seemed a natural fit. I never thought I would do anything other than play in the tech scene.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? One of my oldest friends once told me: “Never stop dancing in the rain, it will keep you, you.” I think about it often when I start feeling myself slip away or the things I want begin to deviate from the plan or what is right and makes me happy or the good of others.

What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the tech sector? If you love technology jump in with both feet and let it wash all over you.

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? Possibility. I get to travel a lot and I am always amazed at what is happening in technology in Africa.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? I hope I never grow up. I get to play so much now. I want to play forever.

Frew Murdoch

Frew Murdoch, HR Pulse

Frew Murdoch, HR Pulse

Name: Frew Murdoch

Designation: Assistant Editor: HR Pulse

Company: ITWeb

What do you do every day? I write, do the online publishing for HR Pulse, sub, edit and proof, publish press releases, meet clients and co-run the SEO and keyword strategy for our website. I set up the newsletter and love playing with HTML code. When I publish, I use a Joomla backend for events, modules, press offices etc.

How did you get into the tech space? With a lot of luck. I had a profile on Bizcommunity and no experience, but the previous editor of HR Pulse found me and ‘threw me in the deep end’. I was fortunate enough to be able to swim and went from intern to assistant editor in three months.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Rise above!

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? Hit the ground running, so to speak. It takes hard work and great character to make it in this sector. Don’t give up – be determined to grow personally and professionally.

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? Each day is a new chance to prove myself.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? An editor – a great one!

Tanya Kovarsky

Tanya Kovarsky

Tanya Kovarsky

Name: Tanya Kovarsky

Designation: Editor, writer, blogger, trainer

Company: Self, and Rattle and Mum (blog)

What do you do every day? Each day is different, but my days generally include doing freelance work such as writing and editing, and blogging, trying products for review and attending events.

How did you get into the tech space? Mostly by fluke – I left consumer women’s magazines and started another blog, this time a bit more commercial and a lot less personal. I always had an interest in tech, which strengthened through the work I took on – from writing about devices, to training in digital, to blogging as a business.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Never convey negativity in emails, only positivity. Rather keep the negative for face to face. Another bit of running advice that stands out is “keep moving. Always start to finish”. It’s a good life credo too.

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? As with any industry, be humble and work hard. Try to approach things with an open hand to give, rather than an open hand to take.

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? Aside from the obvious – like getting my son to school and earning money – it would also be interacting with people, getting creative, and wearing a bright lipstick or sneakers (I have lots of those).

Who do you want to be when you grow up? Writers Nicole Krauss or Marianne Williamson.
