What do you do every day? I oversee the implementation of HP’s Marketing and Brand strategy – including developing the marketing strategy for new and existing HP laptops, PCs and Workstation products, management of specific campaigns, events, digital marketing, PR and Advertising.

How did you get into the tech space? My career development moved me to Johannesburg about 13 years ago where I began working as a Business Development Manager in an IT specialist private education solutions provider. With my tertiary studies focused on Media, Communications and Computer Management I then then joined HP in 2007 as a Personal Systems Marcoms Specialist.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Life is too short not to take risks.

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? Technology continues to evolve and keeping pace with current technology trends can be a challenge. You must start small and stay engaged. It’s important to continuously build your network, join the tech conversations on social media and ultimately be confident but humble.

What motivates you to get out of bed every day? You can succeed at almost anything for which you have unlimited enthusiasm and passion for. Passion is what drives me every day.  I do what I love and love what I do. My blood is blue – HP Blue.

What do you do every day? I am responsible for running the marketing discipline within the Mint Group of Companies. Mint is a global Microsoft business provider who provides technology solutions to companies in the financial services industry. No two days are the same, our team of four (strategist, content marketer, events producer and social media marketer) crafts exciting messaging and campaigns to promote our brand globally.

We are a one-stop marketing shop that focuses on the full spectrum of marketing services and with our recent expansion to USA and Africa, we now have exposure to marketing to different cultures and expectations.

How did you get into the tech space? I was always in the financial services sector and when the opportunity came about to join one of the largest technology giants in the country, I grabbed the opportunity to be part of the EOH Group. I worked at the Head Office in Bedfordview as part of the Corporate Marketing team. With an inspiring and revolutionary leader like Asher Bohbot, who could not be passionate about technology?

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Always give your “all” in everything you do!

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? Tech is the way to go! According to Satya Nadella, we are in the 4th industrial revolution, Digital Transformation. If you are not part of this revolution, I am afraid you will be left behind!

What motivates you to get out of bed every day? I am passionate about marketing and the impact it has on the success of business. Everyone is a marketer in some shape or form and we are marketing ourselves daily without even noticing. Personal brands extend to professional brands. I love what I do and the motivation comes when people recognise the worth of marketing in the grand scheme of things!

Who do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be someone that can leave a legacy and make a difference so that my girls are proud of their mom and her accomplishments. I want to give back to my community and inspire young girls to be a success in everything they set their hearts on. Success is not determined by the position you hold or the car you drive but is rather the determination and eagerness you put in to any goal you set yourself, whether it is the best cake baker you can be or teacher or developer or UX designer!

What do you do every day? While my role officially at RetroEpic revolves around marketing our own games and games we’re making in conjunction with partners (which involves marketing strategising, social media marketing, media liaison, press releases and so on), I’m also involved in game design and documentation, level design and testing, and in-game copywriting. We’re a small team so everyone wears as many hats as possible (and necessary) to get the games out the door.

How did you get into the tech space? I’ve been involved in the game development community from around the time I was in high school. I started participating in local game dev challenges towards the end of my high school career and then fell in love with boardgame design (one of my pet projects now has its own website: http://worstwarriors.weebly.com/) because of my parallel interest in social psychology. After high school, I studied communications and psychology and then moved to Cape Town to pursue a psychology honours degree. After that, I landed up in marketing, working in agencies as an intern and then as a variety of different positions – gaining a broad spectrum of experience. In the mean time, I got more involved with the Cape Town community and started sharing what I knew about marketing to help the local developers. After doing a talk at one of the meetups, I was approached by co-founder Niki Boschoff to help RetroEpic out a bit with their marketing on a freelance basis. Eventually, I suggested that it would be more useful to have me full time on the team and voila, here I am.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? I don’t know if it counts as advice, exactly, but RetroEpic is run in a way where it’s okay to fail. In fact, Niki told me before joining RetroEpic that he wouldn’t expect me to be perfect straight off the bat. We all know that we’re all going to be making mistakes – we’re all trying to figure it out as best we can – and that’s okay. Knowing that it was okay not to be perfect – in a space that provided that, truly – has been almost life changing. It’s certainly allowed me to be a lot kinder to myself.

 What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? The successful game developers – those who have made a smash hit game – are outliers. Don’t compare yourself to the outliers and don’t get too upset that you haven’t yet made your smash hit game just yet. It’s okay. Keep working at it. Keep trying. But also be realistic about each of your games and their likelihood of success. You may very well be better off not giving up your day-job just yet! (And, again, that’s okay. Most of the game developers in South Africa are making money through other means).

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? RetroEpic feels like family to me. While not every aspect of my day-to-day work is super exciting or stimulating, I get to work with great people on projects that are exciting. That’s worth getting up and going to work every day, in my opinion.

 Who do you want to be when you grow up? I’m still trying to figure out who I am – before trying to emulate anyone else!

What do you do every day? My days are never the same. I’m responsible for driving respective brand goals within a multi-national product portfolio which Mustek Limited distributes. I assist in campaign/brand launches, I keep track of incentives and administer incentive payouts, writing online content for the Mustek website, as well as compiling content for the internal staff newsletter.

My role is office-based but I’m not tied to my desk, I am also actively involved in planning and organising internal staff and reseller events such as product showcases, conferences and exhibitions.

My favourite initiatives to organise are the staff engagement initiatives, these include getting involved in Slippers Day, Mandela day as well as other CSR initiatives.

How did you get into the tech space? I studied Public Relations and Communications Management and never imagined that I would end up in the tech space, more often than not you find that people with my qualification navigate towards PR agencies. I started my career at Mustek Limited as a Switchboard Administrator, followed by being Telesales Consultant and ended up in my current post as a Marketing Assistant. I get to work on a company that services a multinational product portfolio within the IT industry, I haven’t looked back since and here I am three years later, head over heels in IT.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? Whatever you do, go out there and be yourself, do it truthfully and wholeheartedly and you will never go wrong!

What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the tech sector? You have to love learning new things, be open minded and allow yourself to absorb as much as possible.

What motivates you to get out of bed every day?  Wanting to have a better life for myself and knowing that I can do something to make someone else’s day better.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? An even better version of myself with a big heart, it’s all I have at the end of the day.

This was at Transtel (the telecommunications arm of Transnet) 20 years ago. I fell in love with the sector (and stayed). I simply thrive in this dynamic and fast changing world.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? “Be the fearless leader that you are – it’s your unique selling proposition”.

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? You don’t have to be technical to succeed in this industry, all you need to have is the passion to serve customers and people and the insatiable desire to learn.

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? I feel that I have found my purpose. Living my “purpose-driven life” is a miracle in itself. I am driven by the creation of new ideas and almost everyday I have one to offer to my sector or company or team.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be “ME”- the brand called “Mala”, because I am CEO of brand me.

What do you do every day? I’m learning that the first hour of the day is the most important as it determines the tone of the entire day, so I’ve been dedicating my first hour to reflection, gratitude and calm. Not always possible but I try! Then I tackle my to-do list.

As a marketer, my to-do list consists of strategy development, blogging, web design, graphic design, and social media management for myself and my clients.

How did you get into the tech space? Quite by chance. I started my working career as an assistant to the stock planner of a large retail corporation. Years later, the company I was employed at needed a Systems Analyst but they couldn’t afford one, so they decided to take someone from the business who understood retail processes and have them learn everything about IT. I was the privileged one! This training provided me with a holistic view of what the IT industry was and the role I wanted to play in it going forward.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? That everything happens exactly as it should, even when it doesn’t seem that way at the time. When I look back on my life from this perspective, even the situations that seemed like disasters at the time provided insights that changed my life for the positive. Knowing this, I’m able to take life less seriously and look for blessings in every situation.

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? Technology is everywhere so when you choose a career in the tech sector, you can combine your passions in unlimited ways. If you’re passionate about technology and you’re as passionate about, for example, Arts & Culture, you can choose a career that uses technology within Arts & Culture. No matter what your passions, hobbies or causes, as a woman in technology there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from creating your dream job and your dream life. You can choose to change the world from the comfort of your home or you can choose to travel the world as you change it.

What motivates you to get out of bed everyday? Knowing that each day is a fresh opportunity to create the life I want.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? Wiser. So that I’m always able to share with others what I wish I knew when I was a young woman in business.

How did you get into the tech space? I was offered this opportunity at Microsoft 12 years ago and never looked back. Prior to joining Microsoft I worked at the Post Office HQ in Pretoria and was very fortunate that after the split of the Department of Telecommunications into the Post Office and Telkom, I was able to join the Post Office team to develop a corporate identity for the Post Office that covered a completely new brand – new look and feel for the post offices, a vibrant logo, uniforms, stationary, signage and many more to ensure the transition was well noted.

What was the best advice anyone ever gave you? The more your practice the luckier you get!

What advice would you given someone wanting to get into the tech sector? It is the sector to be in, if you look at the top brands today they are mostly technology companies as they are innovating faster than light and this offers customers a means to create new streams of business, ensure staff are much more productive and deliver on business requirements much quicker than before.

What motivates you to get out of bed every day? The team of smart people at Microsoft. Every day we have the opportunity to sit around a table, apply our minds and come up with exciting and new ways of showing real business value to customers in a creative and fun way.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? A conservationist- I want to save the rhino or any other animal that is in danger of not seeing the next generation.
